2023 Program and Updates
This year GHS will use the Mass Teen Book award nominee list again for our summer reading program 2023. Pulled from these lists, there are 4 anchor fiction texts that relate to a topic for each grade. Students can choose the anchor text to read, a title from the other suggested list, or a title related to their class theme.
Students will complete an assignment (more info below) about their chosen book in the fall for a formative ELA course grade.
Incoming 9th: Resilience and Resourcefulness : Transitioning to High School.
Incoming 10th: Nurturing Kindness and Compassion
Incoming 11th: Creativity, Character, and Careers
Incoming 12th: Resilience and Resourcefulness: Transitioning Beyond High School

Your English Class RequirementsAP and Honors texts will be integral parts of the first quarter curricula. College I and College II students will be invited to contribute their summer reading experiences during their first quarter, though the form of these contributions (whether they be formal discussions, interactive peer group experiences, or individual reflections). However, the cornerstone for these contributions, along with the Honors and AP work, will be the double-sided notes students take while reading.
Reading OptionsIf students require differentiated books and options for the anchor books based on difficulty level and material type, please reach out to an English teacher, the librarian Mrs.Teixeira, or Meg O'Neill from the Sawyer Free Public Library. Students are also highly encouraged to read or listen to any materials that reflect the 4 themes.

Summer Reading Note Taking Template
The double sided note-taking method and literary sign posts are a key tool that can help students engage more with their summer reading texts and help them remember the content.
